Oral Surgery Q & A

What is oral surgery?

Oral surgery is a type of dentistry that treats a variety of diseases, injuries, and defects around your head, neck, face, and jaw. This surgical specialty can also help solve your cosmetic or reconstructive dental needs.

What are different types of oral surgery?

Many dental procedures performed in a dental office are considered oral surgery. Some of these procedures include tooth extractions, the removal of cysts, and dental implants placement.

Tooth extractions

Tooth extractions are the most common type of surgical procedure. Dr. Benhuri performs tooth extractions when the following occurs:

  • Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth
  • Severely damaged tooth due to decay, root fracture, or trauma
  • Primary or baby teeth fail to fall out, preventing permanent teeth from emerging

Orthodontic treatment plans may require the removal of some teeth to reduce crowding and achieve the optimum result.

Removal of cysts

A cyst is a sac of tissue that has either fluid or soft material inside it. When a cyst forms around your teeth, it’s referred to as a dental cyst. These often occur due to tooth infection or trauma.

Dr. Benhuri may choose to remove your cyst to examine it and to prevent another cyst from forming. Removing the cyst also helps tissue to repair themselves.

Dental implants

Missing teeth can drastically alter the shape of your mouth, causing your remaining teeth to shift positions, and your jaw to sink. Dental implants provide stability and support to your remaining teeth, as well as prevent further decay and disease.

Dr. Benhuri may recommend placing dental implants to replace missing teeth or help support your denture. Not only are dental implants a cosmetic option, but they also help promote your long-term dental health.
